    Canon Character Section:
    History:
Stein’s childhood is a big series of questionmarks, but here’s what we know for sure:
-he experimented on his first partner often, vivisecting him at night without getting caught??? How???? No one knows (I know. Spirit’s not observant & sleeps real hard. That’s how.)
-he didn’t always care for the laws of the land & would get annoyed that he had to follow them
-he’d regularly beat the hell out of people who fucked w him because he COULD
-he couldn’t control his madness very well
-joined the DWMA (Death Weapons-Meisters Academy) or Shibusen bc his soul perception was super great & he could connect to any weapon at all easily, which helped him chill his shit out

Beyond that, tho, his history is thus:
-graduated Shibusen as one of the best Meisters around, thanks to his amazing connection ability, goes & starts living in his lab just outside the main part of the city
-sometimes he does favors for Lord Death (Shinigami-sama) & takes Spirit out to attack people but not usually bc shit hadn’t hit the fan yet
-two of the main Weapon/Meister sets of the show go to his house & he “tests” them by beating the hell out of them & threatening to dissect them; they pass & he becomes a new teacher at the DWMA
-he hears something of an evil Meister that has black blood; when said Meister shows & almost fatally wounds Soul Eater, he shows up & saves SE’s ass, Maka’s ass & kicks said Meiser’s ass
-stitches Soul Eater back up, everything’s right as rain except the black blood that’s now part of SE & making him deal w madness
-fast forward a little bit, Stein figures out the school nurse is quite literally an evil witch; he calls her out at the Eve Party. She tempts him to join her, saying that she could help him make the world a more chaotic place that he’d love to live in because then he’d get to dissect shit
-he gracefully declines by not saying anything & then getting interrupted by someone who warns him, WOAH STEIN THAT THERE’S A WITCH, GODDAMN
-said witch, named Medusa, busts out of the party & traps most of the people there, except Stein & Spirit & the main characters; they go down to stop her from unleashing the Big Bad Kishin, who is a Meister who consumed his own Weapon & then so many souls that he became a literal god of madness; his madness wavelength is so large & strong that even Lord Death couldn’t kill him & he’s been hidden in a bag of his own skin under the school
-Spirit & Stein manage to trap Medusa in the first part of the hallway to the Kishin, letting the kids get past her to stop her cohorts
-(they don’t, it’s brutal, he gets out, madness starts to inflict itself upon the world)
-when the Kishin gets out, Stein goes a little madnessy but finishes the fight with Medusa in an overly sexual fight that involves her laughing at him, throwing him around, offering him a place in her new world again & then getting her witch ass cut in half
-he stands around as her blood rains down & laughs a lot, bc that’s healthy
-afterwards the Death Scythes, elite weapons that can be wielded by Lord Death because they’ve been elevated with the soul of a witch, all gather in Death City to discuss their Game Plan; he’s part of it because he’s constantly wielding Spirit, who’s a DS, and is one of the best Meisters, as well as being super well-versed on the effects of madness in the world since he’s … always affected by it pretty much
-unbeknownst to him he’s also kind of being put under house arrest & is given Marie back as a partner because of her calming wavelength in an attempt to keep him from losing his shit on everyone; he’s still teaching at the DWMA but he’s not really supposed to go on any missions bc leaving the city will mean he loses it

    Personality:
Franken Stein is a man who loves taking things apart. To Stein, everything and everyone in existence is just another experiment waiting to happen. He himself is not an exclusion to the rule - the scars on his body and the screw in his head are all experiments he's done on himself. He's constantly curious about everything around him, and anomalies interest him the most. To say he loves dissection is to grossly understate his obsession. Stein is driven by his curiosity and a tireless scientific drive, and dissection is simply his preferred method of figuring out how something works.

He’s also incapable of feeling empathy, to a point, and has an inability to register emotion or understand overly emotional displays, something he's openly admitted. This gives him an emotionally uninhibited view on the world and a (by the standards of society) skewed sense of right and wrong - he argues, what is right and wrong, truly, beyond a list of laws set by the leaders of the world? He sees nothing wrong with taking apart endangered animals or threatening schoolchildren by throwing scalpels at their heads or threatening them with dissection. This also makes his manner of speaking very precise, emotionless and blatant. He holds nothing back. He very often speaks his mind, no matter how harsh it might be, because he sees no reason to stop himself. What’s the point of protecting someone’s ego if his advice can help?

Despite his lack of empathy, Stein has shown to be very protective and supportive of his students. During the battle against Medusa, he asked all of them to promise him not to die. He constantly goes out of his way to make sure that Maka has the information she needs, and he'll always stop to answer questions or help with remedial lessons. He offers to help Maka understand and surpass her own inner demons, saves Soul's life without question (even going so far as to say he's worried about his condition) and gives Black*Star a training tool when he's overwhelmed by his weapon's special forms. His lack of empathy in no way stops him from creating lasting relationships, if few and far between.

He seems to have a vibrant passion for teaching, helping his student in any way he can - he is often openly answering almost any question posed to him and taking time and care whenever he's teaching classes or called upon by a student. He may be a singularly harsh critic and demand a lot of their energy and work, but Stein honestly has confidence in their abilities, and is able to pick out their strengths and weaknesses and play to each student individually when he needs to.
He's also exhibited a very close friendship with Spirit, which has obviously manifested over years of training and interaction. Stein seems to trust Spirit innately, a bond with his first Weapon partner that exceeds the trust needed of a Meister/Weapon bonding. He tends to antagonize Spirit in all ways, simply to get a reaction, but he quite obviously leans on Spirit in his own way, and the two make a very terrifyingly adapt team. Stein also shows a strong bond with Marie, his second Weapon partner, to the point that she’d come for him and he’d trusted her implicitly to. He’s in no ways lacking his friendships, as weird and rare as they might be.

Stein is entirely confident in himself and his abilities. He doesn't care for the opinions of the people around him in regards to himself - he is who he is, and he's made himself that way for his own reasons, not for the acceptance or enjoyment of others. He fights with the precise movements of someone who isn't accustomed to losing, but he’s not one to start fights or assume he’s going to win because of his skill per se (he believes he’s going to win because he has to win, usually, in canon, and he seems to approach every fight he’s asked to participate in this way) and he doesn’t fear losing. His proficiency in martial arts and confidence in his own abilities allows him to move with ease throughout fights and daily life alike. He slouches in his chair, has a tendency to lay all over a bed or a couch, moves sometimes like a puppet on easy strings. Stein has no problem throwing himself about, and sometimes acts recklessly or looks silly, entering or exiting rooms falling out of his chair, onlookers’ opinions be damned.

Stein suffers from a natural madness, manifesting itself in the desire to dissect and experiment on every living thing, that he can usually keep very firmly under control; his grasp on reality starts to slip very quickly every second he is exposed to the madness wavelength a particularly evil soul can harbor. He’s got a set of coping mechanisms, of course, to deal with his own personal madness and obsessions, such as smoking constantly, turning the screw in his head or wearing his glasses to help him focus. When his madness takes him, he’s still seen trying to control it and keep it down. He’s dedicated most of his life to living within the rules and not lose himself, as far as he’s concerned, and he clings to this desperately in the worst of times. (His canon point, however, means that he probably won’t have this problem very often; that, the lack of madness wavelengths, and the lack of his Soul Perception, which I’m assuming will be nerfed at first.)

Because of his madness, and perhaps to help deal with the madness, Stein has created his own set of "morals" (the term used loosely, as he would not refer to it as such) and expectations of himself. While he modifies these morals very slightly to the law of the land, he hates to be harangued for it; he keeps a very tight leash on his own urges and wants and gets annoyed when this is ignored. He might talk a big game about dissecting someone, but if someone he trusts takes him too seriously, it’s obvious they don’t trust him as much as he trusts them, and he will walk away from the relationship. He knows his boundaries, he has his standards, and he does not make a habit of randomly attacking or dissecting the others around him, so the thought of being misunderstood by someone he considers close is a very personal insult. (Which- super hard to arouse in Stein. He’s not exactly easy to offend.)

Tl;dr- Great teacher with a passion for helping his students, takes his job as a doctor and protector very seriously as well, despite his low empathy & obsession with dissection. =w=

    Powers/Abilities:
    I am so sorry.
A quick note: a lot of the wiki links have different names for ... well, pretty much every single ability I've listed. This is because of the language shift from Japanese to English - for scanlations, the manga and the anime, everything is different, depending purely on the translator. Since I'm taking him from the anime, I'll be using all of the anime's names for the attacks, etc.
Stein's what's known as a meister, a person who can perceive souls and use weapons (weapons from his world, though I wouldn't doubt his ability with just some random scythe lying around, not that it'd help his attacks). He can use his soul in a variety of different ways, and is very powerful - the strongest to ever graduate from the DWMA. These abilities all vary in strength and duration, and, though he is quite powerful on his own, he generally needs a weapon to be able to use more than one for longer than a few minutes, with the exception of his Soul Force.
Of course, he is human, and destined to make mistakes. Even with a weapon, his victory is not assured - he is not only fully capable of being mortally wounded, but he has had a few very close calls in the past. Also, Stein usually only uses his abilities when he’s defending himself, but he’s been known to use them in experiments before-- with, of course, the exception of Soul Perception, which is always passively in use.
For the app, I've split his attacks into natural abilities, abilities he can use without a weapon and abilities he can only use with a weapon in order to show what he can and can't do on a daily basis. When it comes to in-game weapons from his world, the ability to use them will be completely up to their player, just as it is in canon - he can't force someone to take weapon form in canon, and doing so in game is not only a dick move but grossly against his character and abilities.
I can't stress the difference between a weapon from his world and a normal weapon for him enough. As weapons from his world are literal people with souls to strengthen his own attacks, he is unable to get any source of power from just some random weapon laying around.
    His own natural abilities:
  • Soul Perception - Stein is a very powerful meister, and so he can not only use the innate meister ability to perceive the souls of living beings, he can also read their basic personality types and emotions. He can notice the smallest changes in a wavelength, and he can even go so far as to change his own wavelength to match theirs in order to avoid taking damage from soul-based attacks - an ability he is the only known possessor of, and something he is particularly good at. This allows him the ability to use almost any weapon from his world without much trouble. He isn't, however, able to use this ability see through a witch's Soul Protect ability; if she has the Soul Protect spell on, he is completely incapable of telling much about her soul. She'll look totally human to him until she drops it. He can also usually sense magic or other soul-based abilities being used with this, thanks to his high proficiency. It’s a passive ability most of the time after years of constantly using it.

  • Close Combat Expert | Superior Soul Knowledge - Stein is in fairly good condition and health, and versed in several different types of martial arts. He's fairly physically strong and is able to run for a while without getting winded. He's been known to fight from his computer chair without difficulty. | There's not much Stein doesn't know about souls or the lore in his world. He's an insatiable researcher and uses his vast knowledge base to assist him in battle. Because of this, he can innately understand any soul, and "fix" his own wavelength to nullify the opponent's.

  • His own natural abilities that can be stronger with but don’t need a weapon:
  • Soul Resonance - This is literally "the Resonance of the Souls". It's the technique of a meister matching their wavelength with their weapon partner, allowing them to greatly hike their power level and work simultaneously. Stein is able to do a sort of "self resonance", which allows him to use his Soul Force attack. While he doesn't need a weapon to resonate (and he can definitely resonate with anyone he sees fit, considering the unique trait his soul has - being able to change his wavelength at will), this technique allows him to do much more powerful attacks when paired with a weapon.

  • Soul Force - This is a direct hit that has to be registered to whoever he attacks - it is only melee, and cannot be used for ranged attacks. He controls his soul wavelength, which appears as electricity in his hand, and pushes it into the victim, which can be controlled to be as light as a slap to the face to the power of a very violent internal attack. It's powerful on its own, being a specialty of Stein's, and though having a weapon makes it stronger, he can easily produce this attack on his own. He can use this technique to knock out his victim or stop their attacks, provided their attacks are created through soul manipulation (ie: he can stop even the superskills of someone from his own world, but not everyone’s or everything). Without Soul Resonance, he can’t do this; it’s because of Soul Resonance that he’s able to raise his soul energy to such a level as to use it as a weapon.

  • Double Palm Soul Force - Twin Spears - This is a more concentrated Soul Force. By using both palms simultaneously, he can force his wavelength into the victim in such a strong attack that it can easily knock the victim out and cause serious internal damage. Since Stein needs both hands to complete this attack, it's assumed that it can't be used while holding a weapon, and therefore it cannot get stronger.

  • Soul Thread Sutures - This, he can do on himself (to perhaps stitch himself to a floor or wall) for very brief periods of time (he can release the stitches at his leisure, especially if he has a weapon, with the command "Extraction"), but, without a weapon, he can't maintain the stitches on another person for any amount of time unless they are directly touching him (which would simply end up sewing them to him). The stitches are easily broken without a weapon to strengthen the attack, especially by strong opponents. (With a weapon, this attack is powerful enough to temporarily hold a strong opponent, for even up to ten minutes if he needs to.)

  • Attacks he can only do with a weapon (from his world) in hand:
  • Experimental Ectoplasm - This temporary shield can only be attained by resonating with a weapon's soul. It lasts only about 10 seconds. This technique has only once been used in canon, and only with Spirit Albarn. It’s unknown whether he can do this with another weapon, as each one is different and has a specific set of abilities tailored to their own souls.

  • Soul Thread Diffusion Sutures - a form of Soul Thread Sutures that is impossible to complete without a weapon. First, an extremely powerful form of Soul Force has to be directly administered to a victim. Then, both weapon and meister have to focus entirely on the stitches lacing themselves through the victim's body, immobilizing the victim (and, effectively, the weapon and meister duo, who must focus so thoroughly on the attack that moving would break it). Even with a weapon, this ability cannot be used for very long - maybe five minutes at the very most. The only weapon this has been seen in use with is Spirit Albarn, but it’s likely that another Death Scythe (or extremely powerful weapon) could allow this.

  • Witch Hunter - The Legendary Superskill of the Scythemeister, though his form of it is, as everything he is involved with, covered in stitches. While resonating with a scythe weapon (a scythe weapon only!! It’s a scythe-specific power, remember), Stein can easily use this ability. He can also use the forms Figure 6 Hunter and Figure U Hunter, which is simply using Witch Hunter in specific strokes, and has been seen using the Witch Hunter fluidly to defend himself. (It's unknown if he can use Genie Hunter or Kishin Hunter, & mun assumes he can’t or won’t, relying on his other skills instead.)

  • Appearance:
    nice
Stein is about 6'3" with ashen skin, green eyes, shaggy silver hair and a huge gray bolt through his head. He can turn the bolt at will & does all the time, actually, haha. He's lean and muscular, and has zigzag stitches across his face and various parts of his body (chest & back, right arm are known for sure). He's always wearing clothing that's been torn apart and stitched back together, and usually has his zigzaggy labcoat on, as well. (his soul is a big blue zigzaggy sphere w the bolt through it, too. He’s all stitches & screws, man)
    Samples:
    Actionspam Sample:
[ well it took him three days to figure out just who the actual head honcho was as far as construction around here was, and now that he’s figured out, he’s on a singular mission to get what he wants. He beelines towards them, cigarette already lit and smoking between his lips. ]

It’s about time I found you. [ that doesn’t sound ominous- ] I have a request. I need a new place to sleep. I can try and pay you, I guess. It’s not like they give me very much.

[ a long pull off his cigarette, like he’s waiting for the reply; he’s not. In fact, he’s going to interrupt if they start to say anything. ]

I guess I could help you if you need any surgeries lately. Something in, maybe? Or something out, instead, but you look pretty healthy. [ he goes to turn the screw in his head: krrk krrk krrk. ] Yeah, I could definitely see something on the end of your arm, there. Maybe to help with building, so it goes faster. How’s that sound for a trade?

    Prose Sample:
It’s like losing an arm, honestly, not that he ever has. Or maybe a leg. Both legs, he decides, after he recovers from what has to be the fourth person he’s accidentally run into walking around a corner. Goddamn this city and what it’s done to him. Yes, the cacophony of being in a new place with his Soul Perception going insane would have been uncomfortable, but only for about an hour. That and the three day headache afterwards would have been so much more preferable to this… emptiness.

Stein makes his way out of the temple, grabbing a cigarette out of his pocket and lighting it desperately. Hard to think without the constant hum of souls around him. It’s like being locked in a big sound-cancelling room and having his legs cut off. He keeps running into people, people keep accidentally sneaking up on him, he has a hard time sleeping, he feels empty… It’d been such a long time since he’d had to stop having to CONSIDER using it that the absence is throwing him more off balance than he’d thought it would. Then again, he’d never considered this being real. Moving to different realms, okay, that was something he could roll with, but losing Soul Perception? What kind of fucked up curse was this? Clearly there had to be witches involved somehow, because who the hell else could be this cruel.

Though, it was nice, in it’s own way. Just a little bit. If there were madness wavelengths here, he couldn’t feel them, and that made his soul feel a little better, honestly. The strain of the last few days in the City were pretty horrible, thanks to the Kishin escaping. Damn mess. “Wonder how it’s going,” he says aloud, letting out a long breath of smoke. “Hope they’re all still in one piece.” Where there wasn’t madness, there was loneliness, a reaction he’d never expected to experience. Spirit, Marie, the kids.. that was home. That was familiar. Here, he couldn’t even hear souls.

His cigarette isn’t finished, but he heads back inside anyways, since he’s gotten enough fresh air. He smokes inside back home, so why would here be a problem? If they have a problem with it, they can send him back home, for all he cares. Stein takes another deep pull from the cigarette, letting the smoke out slowly in some kind of passive aggressive fight me. The smoke trails behind him as he stalks back towards his forced labor session. Still have all that paperwork to do. Good thing they haven’t noticed he doesn’t have a degree, because at least working in the infirmary clears his head.

Which, he desperately needs, apparently, because he’s just run into his fifth accidental victim. Stein goes with the flow of the hit, stumbling back easily, his body loose. Thank god he’s good at fighting, because honestly. This would get even older if he kept falling over, too. He laughs loudly, trying to give off a friendly vibe, though he has no idea what that even means for this poor random person, since he can’t hear their soul and change his own to match. “Ahhh, I’m sorry! I didn’t hear you coming.” Hilarious! He grins wide, because that’s friendly, right? It really just ends up looking ghoulish instead. “They really ought to put mirrors up at every junction, don’t you think?”
